Storm over a Fishing Harbour

Jan Josefsz. van Goyen

Jan Josefsz. van Goyen - Storm over a Fishing Harbour
At the end of the thirties van Goyen started painting views of marines, lakes and rivers in different states of weather. The strong wind is playing with the barges and leans into the sailing ships dangerously. There are rays of light coming through the dark clouds - van Goyen managed to capture the atmosphere with a meteorological precision. His paintings are not theatrical dramas of clash between man and the natural element but a result of well observed natural processes (he is supposed to have sailed a sailboat on which he made sketches).
