Pieter de Molijn

Pieter de Molijn - Country Road with Resting Pilgrims
Pieter de Molijn established a new view of the Dutch rural areas. In his works, he revealed the singular character of the landscape with sand dunes in the vicinity of Haarlem, pointing out its special charm. Undulating terrain, a massive oak, rural cottages and a road running towards a distant horizon, those are the everyday motifs that artists had neglected so far. The artist´s view of the sky with flying clouds and transformation of the landscape with light were also new. The monumentality of the painting proves Molijn´s contribution to the radical change in the Haarlem landscape painting.
