Pieter de Bloot

Pieter de Bloot - Flat Landscape
On the small tondo panel, Bloot achieved an amazing sense of depth by suggesting the bed of an obliquely running stream, which flows around a sandy dune. The striking silhouettes of the villagers heading for the pub situated under a mighty oak stand out against the sky. A distinct strip of clouds indicates a windswept climate. The low horizon and predominantly ochre colour scheme reveal the experience of tonal painting of the Haarlem landscape artists of the 1630s.
