Archangel Gabriel From the Annunciation

Wenzel Lorenz Reiner

Wenzel Lorenz Reiner - Archangel Gabriel From the Annunciation
Wenzel Lorenz Reiner is one of the most outstanding masters of Bohemian Baroque painting; he was mainly noted for his many superb fresco paintings. His drawing oeuvre was already highly valued in the 18th century. The light, Baroquely dramatic, yet visually convincing drawing of angels from the Annunciation scene is one of Renier’s finest works on paper. The purpose of this drawing has not yet been determined. Apart from the obvious intention to realize it in a fresco painting, a hypothesis has been put forth suggesting that the drawing could have served as a model for a sculptor (and its affinity to the style of Matthias Bernard Braun was claimed).
