Study for the wall painting Visions of Antiquity for the Lyon museum

Pierre-Cécile Puvis de Chavannes - Study for the wall painting Visions of Antiquity for the Lyon museum
The studies were made for a triptych of wall paintings (Visions of Antiquity, Christian Inspirations and Rhône and Saône) for the Lyon museum. The study for the Visions of Antiquity captures figures with a goat in a landscape with a rocky coast evoking the Mediterranean atmosphere of the legendary Golden Age of pagan Antiquity. The wall painting is an image of peace and idleness in the Antique world and acts as a counterpart of a composition on the opposite wall, which depicts the creative zeal of mediaeval artists. They face each other: two key principles of art that influenced the life and thought of humankind.
