Anton Kern - The Decision of the Holy Trinity to Save the World with Christ´s Sacrifice
Anton Kern, a native of Děčín (Tetschen), is called “the Venetian master of Saxon and Bohemian Rococo art”. The talented painter received his training in Dresden and Venice. His work in the Venetian studio of Giovanni Battista Pittoni had a lasting impact on Kern’s artistic style. After returning from Italy, he was professionally active in Dresden, northern Bohemia and Prague. One of his prestigious commissions was to decorate the Catholic Court church (Katholische Hofkirche) in Dresden. The subject matter of the high altar painting was to be the theological theme of God’s Plan of Salvation. Kern executed the drawing, preliminary sketch and also a worked-up modello, however this altarpiece was never realized.
