Interior of a Fictitious Ancient Temple with a Burnt Offering to Apollo

Ludvík Kohl - Interior of a Fictitious Ancient Temple with a Burnt Offering to Apollo
Together with a sober palette, Kohl's feeling for perspective and accurate rendering of building elements, predestined him for architectural themes. In addition to Gothic-like architecture, his major interest, Kohl often turned to ancient subjects. In the early 19th century he painted a number of views showing somewhat vague fictitious spaces with burnt offerings to ancient gods. The pictures boast a wealth of decorative architectural elements and a stage-like approach to light.
