Montenegrin Madonna

Jaroslav Čermák

Jaroslav Čermák - Montenegrin Madonna
In addition to scenes from the war between Montenegro and Turkey Čermák also painted the everyday life of this southernmost Slavonic land. Montenegro fascinated him with its ancient customs and virgin nature. He returned again and again to the traditional picture of mother and child, handling it in many variants and modifications, in both interiors and natural settings. In this moving scene of a mother laying her child into the cradle he only used simple means and colour combinations worthy of old masters to create an atmosphere that lent veracity to his paintings, whether lyrical or dramatic.
