The Sculpture Garden of Cardinal Cesi

Hendrick van Cleve lll.

Hendrick van Cleve lll. - The Sculpture Garden of Cardinal Cesi
The painting brilliantly captured a collection of ancient sculptures in a garden near the Vatican palace. It was assembled by Cardinal Cesi in the early 16th century, but abolished as early as the mid-17th century. The garden thus succumbed to ruin, yet its painting has survived. Not only did Cleve render the atmosphere of this cultured place in a masterly way, but he also provided evidence of the sometime appearance of the Eternal City.
