Still Life with a Jug

André Derain

André Derain - Still Life with a Jug
Derain was attracted to the world of things. The still life genre gave him an opportunity to naturally accomplish this inclination of his. Therefore, still lifes are represented in the artist’s entire oeuvre. Still Life with a Jug is one of several still lifes of magnanimous conception arranged in the space which manifested Derain’s sense of matter-of-factness in a distinctive form. Similar to his other still lifes, Derain used here the Cézanne motif of a serviette falling over the edge of the table as well as his frequently occurring motifs of a cup-glass, jug, and basket.
