From the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands

Antonín Chittussi

Antonín Chittussi - From the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands
Chittussi, fully in accordance with prevailing trends, which saw in an accurate localization and the rendering of a specific landscape type an important assessment criterion, tended to exhibit French landscapes in Prague and Czech ones in Paris. This picture scored a major success at the 1882 Paris Salon. Before painting this monumental motif from the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, Chittussi made several sketches in pencil and oil, indicative of his search for an ultimate form. In this picture he applied the "French way" of painting to a Czech motif - the result is a realistic, even somewhat raw rendering of a deserted countryside, full of empathy.
