A Bull in the Bog

Karel Purkyně

Karel Purkyně - A Bull in the Bog
With its fresh brushwork and touches of colours, this small picture from Purkyně’s French period, describes the tragedy of a mighty bull, sinking irretrievably with his forelegs into the bog. The play of light on the bog surface, the animal and the dramatically conceived sky are in the painter’s favourite colours - contrasts of green and red, which Purkyně developed in numerous variations in his entire work.
