Antonín Mánes

Antonín Mánes - Kokořín
In the first half of the 19th century Kokořín was in ruins - while its owners, the Ahrenbergs, totally neglected the castle, it captivated many poets (Karel Hynek Mácha) and painters (Josef Navrátil). The castle may be seen in several canvases by Antonín Mánes from the late 1830s. In this picture the painter, in the spirit of Romanticism, filled the ideal, composed scenery of Kokořín with wild, inaccessible nature, a dramatic storm, broken tree trunks and a waterfall.
