Beech Forest

Mařák was a Romantic by training and disposition. Passionately fond of nature and its great admirer, he appreciated above all the melancholy and soothing calm of the forest. His main field were forest interiors and in this area he was master of sensitive colour compositions. He suppressed glaring tones, while admirably developing greyish, silvery, green and brown hues, with which he successfully depicted and enhanced the multiplicity and diversity of forest interiors as a specific type of natural phenomena, in both darkness and light. His principle was to express light with colours and on this basis he gradually evolved his personal style of intimate and poetic Luminism. From the beginning to the very end light was for Mařák the chief means of expressing mood.
