Portrait of Johanna Baroness Kotz

Josef Mánes

Josef Mánes - Portrait of Johanna Baroness Kotz
Mánes painted the daughter of Christian baron Kotz, regional administrator and governor in Brno, in the summer 1866 at the Chodový Újezd estate. The painter used to spend some time at the estate in 1861, 1863 and 1866, having fled Prague before the Prussian occupation. This beautiful intimate portrait painted in clear colours shows the natural charm of a twenty-year-old girl without any unnecessary frills, simply with a white sprig of morning-glory in her hair. Johanna Kotz (1846-1911) married in 1877 baron F.Witt of Dörring and moved to Linz.
