Self Portrait

These pendant portraits were probably created on the occassion of the painter’s marriage to Anna Veronica, a member of the Old Town of Prague patrician family of the Hertzogs (November 21, 1725). The only known surviving self portrait of Reiner shows a face of a wealthy, confident, and successful man. In much the same way the jewels and accessories to the fashionable dress, which frame the thoughful face of his wife, point to the social status of members of well-to-do and respected burgher strata. Wenzel Lorenz Reiner devoted himself to portraiture only rarely, if we leave out the fictional portrayals of the ancestors and members of the Wallenstein dynasty at the chateau in Duchcov, yet he achieved remarkable results in this field, as well.
