Christian Christof Count Clam-Gallas

Emanuel Max

Emanuel Max - Christian Christof Count Clam-Gallas
Christian Christof count Clam-Gallas (1770-1838), Lord Marshal of the Bohemian kingdom, was since 1830 until his death president of the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts. He was a generous patron of the arts and in contrast to most members of the Society was keenly interested in contemporary art, especially in the work of Viennese Neo-Classicists. A great music lover, he founded in 1811 the Prague conservatory of music, organized concerts in his palace and was on friendly terms with Beethoven. Initilly, Max did a study of Clam-Gallas's portrait not long before the count's death - he only completed the marble statue in 1843 in Rome.
