Josef Václav Myslbek

Josef Václav Myslbek - AUGUST ŘEHOŘ
August Řehoř (1827-1895) owner of the Prague pharmacy “At the Imperial eagle”, was a prominent patron of the arts in the second half of the 19th century. He donated to the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts more than fifty works by European 19th-century painters, e.g.Remi van Haanen, Robert Bompiani, Oswald Achenbach and Robert Russ, as well as a set of Czech 19th-century paintings e.g. by Julius Mařák, Beneš Knüpfer and Alois Kirnig. The generous patron refused to have his deeds mentioned - the Society commissioned his bust only after his death and Myslbek had work to from photographs. The statue was officially installed in 1896 during the centenary celebrations of the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts.
