Girl’s Dream

Vincenc Makovský

Vincenc Makovský - Girl’s Dream
Makovský’s surrealism, which followed the latest trends in European sculpture combined subconscious impulses and psychic automatism with an elaborate organic form. An egg-shaped form covered with a multitude of abstract lines is inserted into the real bodily volume of a semi-recumbent torso with sharply cut thighs. The unclear symbolism of the composition, which attracts attention with its mysteriousness and eroticism, can be explained as being inspired by the Greek myth about the love of Io and Zeus, who transformed himself into a cloud of mist. Its round form can also be interpreted as an archetypal symbol of the world’s beginning.
