This print comes from the collection of twelve lithographs in which Oskar Kokoschka reflected on his relationship with Alma Mahler (1912-1914). He used the inspiration of his private life to support a higher goal - meditating about the universe and the instinctual aspect of man. The title of the cycle, The Bound Columbus (Der gefesselte Columbus) refers to the film The Coming of Columbus (1912) which he saw with Alma Mahler. The lithographs were published by Fritz Gurlit in an album (1916) and in a book with Kokoschka’s comments (1921).
