Wallerant Vaillant - engraver, Antonis van Dyck - inventor - Charles II of England as a Child
Vaillant did this charming portrait of Charles II of England at roughly two years old in two variants. In both, he adopted the figure of the young Charles II from the group portrait of Charles I and his family painted by Anthonis van Dyck in around 1632 (The Royal Collection, London). A hard to read removed inscription - Rembrant Pinx. - confirms that Vaillant reused the plate on which he had previously reproduced the Portrait of an Old Man by Rembrandt (also on display).
