George Cruikshank - engraver - Spring Sketches, from an album My Sketchbook
As the 1834 album My Sketchbook amply illustrates, Cruikshank, the author of more than ten thousand works, was able to live up to Hogarth’s legacy only to a limited degree. Hogarth’s synthesis of high and low art was no longer possible in Cruikshank’s day - the world of satire was by then greatly removed from any artistic pretensions.
