Wenceslaus Hollar - engraver - South East Corner of Tangier from the cycle Various Views of Tangier
Late in life, Hollar visited the fortified harbour of Tangier in Morocco as a member of the English royal diplomatic expedition, which gave him the unique opportunity to experience a great sea voyage. Afterwards he spent long weeks and months on the African coast from where he could watch the shores of Gibraltar and other places. He produced a number of imposing views from Tangier, and the resulting series of drawings and etchings, made towards the end in his career, is recognized among his very best accomplishments. Hollar animated the foreground of his scenes with groups of idyllic strollers, who in reality could hardly have moved in such a carefree manner through the area.
