Bernard Picart - engraver - The Great Sacrifice of the Canadian Indians
Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a French engraver who spent most of his life in Holland. Although he was primarily a book illustrator, the series of prints for the book Religious Ceremonies and Customs of All the Peoples of the World (Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde) occupies an indelible place in his work. The seven-volume collection with 263 graphic sheets was published in Amsterdam between 1723 and 1737.
