Thomas Cook - engraver, William Hogarth - inventor - A Rake’s Progress V
Tom tries to solve his predicament by marrying a rich one-eyed widow. In the background, in an old church in Marylebone, which in Hogarth’s time was located outside of London and which was notorious for performing secret weddings, the poor and incorrigible Sarah Young, with an infant in her arms and her mother in her wake, attempts to foil the ceremony. Tom - already leering at his new spouse’s handmaid - is mirrored by a dog (rather similar to Hogarth’s own pug) licking a one-eyed female dog.
