Ichikawa Ebizō V as the Hermit Senso (Senso Dōjin)

Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III)

Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) - Ichikawa Ebizō V as the Hermit Senso (Senso Dōjin)
Although this sheet from the drama about the well-known magician named Jiraiya is complete, it comes from a triptych. Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII features as Jiraiya on the right under a tree, while Iwai Kumesaburō III playing Otsuna can be seen on the left by a stream. The pilgrim wearing makeup in the evil blue colour kumadori is seated in the mouth of a huge frog. Pilgrim Senso passed on the magic of miraculous toads (gama no yōjutsu) to the story’s protagonist Jiraiya. (See Helena Honcoopová, Kunisada, Praha 2005, pp. 140 and 141)
