Saint Jerome and the Angel of Judgement

Michael Leopold Willmann

Michael Leopold Willmann - Saint Jerome and the Angel of Judgement
The church father that translated the Bible into Latin is portrayed as a penitent in the desert. Willmann depicted Saint Jerome at the moment when he heard the clarion of the angel announcing the Last Judgement; the tension of the moment is accentuated with the sharp collision of the composition diagonals. The dramatic chiaroscuro and subdued scale of colours are typical signs of Willmann’s art which is mostly used in his paintings of cruel martyrdoms of saints.
