Adriaen van Ostade - The Sense of Taste (from a series of the Five Senses)
Series of the Five Senses were among the most popular subjects of Netherlandish genre painting. Ostade treated the theme several times. On the Prague panels single peasant figures act in an outdoor scene with meaningful activities as representatives for one sense, assisted by a dog. A barker beating a pan and a man holding a beer mug and pipe stand for Hearing and Taste respectively. A peasant searching a coin in his pocket represents the Touch, while a man who has just left the outhouse illustrates the Smell. A fifth panel depicting the sense of Sight is apparently lost.
