Wooded Landscape with a Sitting Shepherd

Christian Hilfgott Brand

Christian Hilfgott Brand - Wooded Landscape with a Sitting Shepherd
The landscape features a resting shepherd in a forest interior. The composition and manner of execution suggest an inspiration in the work of Johann Heinrich Roos and corroborate Brand’s willingness to seek inspiration in paintings of other artists. However, an effort to transpose reality onto the canvas with the utmost faithfulness is already discernible in his works. The painting signed „Brand Senior“ attests to its later production in the 1750s when Brand’s son Johann Christian Brand (1722-1795) was already active as an artist. At the time, Brand Senior taught at the Vienna Academy. The painting is one piece from the numerous group of works by Brand the father, originally in the collection of Josef Hoser.
