Master of Frankfurt - workshop - St. Christopher
The Master of Frankfurt lived and worked in Antwerp, acquiring his substitute name after two altarpieces painted for Frankfurt churches. A panting produced in his workshop represents the Christian giant Christopher carrying little Jesus on his shoulder across a troubled river. Christopher is threatened by various demos and monsters. Representing those, the painter obviously let his imagination run wild. A scene full of monsters and hell creatures, doubtless the most vivid part of the painting, is reminiscent of the famous diablerie by Hieronymus Bosch.
