Josef Schusser - Evening in May
A noteworthy motif of poetry and painting at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was an idealized female figure in a natural setting. Influenced by English, French and Belgian art Czech artists also tackled in various ways this subject full of an intimate charm. The late-afternoon spring garden, full of flowers and trees in bloom, with the striking figure of a lady in a white Jugendstil gown, stimulated Schusser to give free rein to a wealth of colours and effects of light, in line with late-19th-century Luminism, and to try to capture a fleeting, emotional moment. Another favourite motif of Neo-Romanticism and Symbolism was the expression of some specific sentiment connected with idealization.
