Still Life with Sea in the Background

Raoul Dufy

Raoul Dufy - Still Life with Sea in the Background
Dufy was an outstanding representative of Fauvism. The characteristics shared by the Fauvists were pure vivid colours applied without any modelling and shading, concise brushwork, decorativeness.Still Life with the Sea in the Background is Dufy's relatively late work, yet fairly close to Fauvist principles. However, the colours are somewhat subdued, rather dark with striking contrasts. The various elements of the picture are only sketchily indicated, there is no modelling, brushwork rapid as in drawings rather than in painting. The impression of simplicity, even ingenuousness is enhanced by the different perspectives and scale, used by the painter to depict individual motifs. Dufy's art, its drawing based on colour, impresses us with its immediacy, lightness and liveliness.
