Maximilian Oppenheimer - Surgery
Created prior to the First World War, in 1912, Surgery marks the peak of the oeuvre of Max Oppenheimer, aka MOPP. The bleak mood and internal tense of this medical scene is further underlined by the facet-like division of draperies by light which was influenced by modern art; this is also reminiscent of El Greco’s art. The motif of the open wound in Surgery has clear symbolism, marking the end of the world and its values where even the surgeon cannot heal the wound.
