Dirk Bouts - follower - The Lamentation of Christ
As evident at first glance, the painter of the Prague specimen drew inspiration from the artwork of Dieric Bouts that he most likely knew from an autopsy. The physiognomy of the figures, their garments, and the background landscape composition are reminiscent of the Bouts panel The Martyrdom of St Erasmus or his canvas The Entombment. Moreover, the painter was also familiar with the artwork of Rogier van der Weyden which becomes evident in the figure of Saint John the Evangelist. An overall pathos and drama of the entire scene further speaks for the influence of Rogier van der Weyden. The anonymous artist, who made the Prague panel, did not fully adopt foreign models; rather, he drew inspiration from them to create his own composition.
