Theodore Rousseau - Stone Bridge near Meudon
Stone Bridge near Meudon by Théodore Rousseau is a remarkable example of the painting style of the Barbizon School in France, of which Rousseau was a prominent representative. His admiration for nature and its concreteness stimulated the creation of this painting rendering the Seine valley near Meudon with Séquin Island. The two soldiers represent the anachronistic staffage, yet depicted in a brand new painting rendition, which corresponds to the efforts of French landscape painters of that time such as Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Pena or Charles F. Daubigny.
