Lanna’s Madonna

Two Marian paintings, Lanna’s Madonna and Lanna’s Virgin and Child on a Crescent Moon, from the collection of Vojtěch Lanna, a significant businessman and benefactor, are further associated with the Virgin and Child on a Crescent Moon from Deštná. Despite their gracefulness and many characteristics similar to the Virgin and Child on a Crescent Moon from Deštná, they do not reach the first-class level of the latter. Having been intended for private devotion, the two paintings feature donors in addition to the patron saints on the original painted frames. However, the crest with a winged arrow in the Lanna’s Madonna has not yet been defined from the point of heraldry. Painted frames and painted reverse imitating stone slab are found in the two Marian paintings of South Bohemian provenance; both of these features were typical of devotion Marian paintings as early as during the Luxembourg era. The décors made by the technique of punched dotsshow repeating schemes used by this workshop; for example, they correspond with the decoration scheme of the halos, embossed sunrays, and tracery with lilies embellishing the panel edges. Lanna’s Virgin and Child on a Crescent Moon repeats the pomegranate motif from the Virgin and Child on a Crescent Moon from Deštná.
