The „Drowned“ Pond

Antonín Chittussi

Antonín Chittussi - The „Drowned“ Pond
In this view of the "Drowned" pond Chittussi arranged the sloping country in horizontal colour bands as a segment of the landscape. He used with considerable sophistication the reflections on the water surface, thus connecting the lower and upper parts of the landscape: the hills on the horizon are disappearing into rain-clouds at the uppermost border of the canvas, while in the lower part of the picture the sky is reflected in the calm surface of the pond. The many rich green hues are in harmony with the violet reflexes and grey values of the clouds. The result is a painting with a very beautiful colour scheme, one of Chittussi's best.
