Flemish School (1st quarter of the 17th century) - Building the Tower of Babel
After the turn of the 16th century, the theme of building the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11.1.9) was a popular one in Southern Netherlands, having been codified by Pieter I. Brueghel. The Old Testament theme worked. Out in the book Antiquatates ludica by Joseph Flavius, was understood as an example of human pride, folly and vanity. Thus, people are not able to communicate - the Babel (chaos) rules. According to Flavius the tower was built by King Nimrod - whom we can see on the right bottom.
