The Seine near Puteaux

Antonín Chittussi

Antonín Chittussi - The Seine near Puteaux
When painting his plein-air pictures, Chittussi wanted to grasp the moods of nature, to capture its transformations and to render a true impression of its light and atmosphere. In the mid-eighties he painted a whole series of "water pictures" from the vicinity of the Seine, their core invariably the calmly flowing river with its flat banks, ships and tug-boats. In this painting, originally called The Seine near Suresnes, we see a large panorama of the open country with the river and mountains on a low horizon. The quietly flowing water gives a calm, almost nostalgic feeling, while the darker subdued tones of nature with grey clouds convincingly render the somewhat sad mood of an autumn day. Chittussi returned to the same place a year later and a little upstream painted an only slightly modified motif which he called Country with the Seine.
