Anonymous - Votive Panel of Jan Očko from Vlašim
The painting is a copybook example of a painting that unites the typical features of the ruler’s presentation of Emperor Charles IV and the presentation of the commissioner and exceptional artistic quality. In the upper part, Emperor Charles IV is depicted under the protection of the patron saint of Bohemia, Saint Sigismund. The Virgin and Child are adored by the emperor and his son Wenceslas who is suggested by Saint Wenceslaus, Duke of Bohemia. The bottom part of the painting is dedicated to the patron saints of the donor Jan Očko of Vlašim, Archbishop of Prague: Saint Procopius, Saint Adalbert, Saint Vitus, and Saint Ludmila. The monumental painting comes from the chapel of the episcopal castle in Roudnice nad Labem. The artist apprenticed from the court circle of Master Theodoric, as evidenced by the soft rendering of volumes and faces as well as the facial types. However, the reduction of the corporeality of figures and emphasis on the lines and rhythm in some draperies foreshadow the work of the Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece. The idealising features of some faces further indicate the Beautiful Style of Czech painting in the late 14th century.
