The Crucifixion

Pieter de Kempener

Pieter de Kempener - The Crucifixion
Pieter de Kempener, otherwise an artist of many Italianate works, imprinted an unusual, almost supernatural atmosphere on the scene of The Crucifixion. Against the dark, gloomy sky, crosses with almost immaterial bodies of the condemned are looming. The three Maries look up to Christ, who turns to his mother. Their mutual bond is pointed out in the consciously simplified composition and subdued coloration of the depicted scene.
