Jan Kotík - Deucalion
Influenced by the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Czech politics also slightly loosened after 1956. The consequences also appeared in culture, though official ideology still strictly attacked the more radical art actions exceeding the realistic dogma. The painting of Jan Kotík from the second half of the fifties, which related to the contemporary stream of abstract expressionism, thus aroused sharp polemics. However, it was a significant impulse for young artists. The generous concept of Deukalion of 1960 brings the topic of the classical mythology which is close to the biblical story of the forefather Noah. The masterful painting attests to the closer cognition and thorough understanding of the world context of post-war western art. The topic of the birth of a new human generation focuses on the motif of a monumental head which was particularly popular in Czech art at the turn of the fifties and sixties and which was related to the existential context of thinking at that time.
