Portrait of Wenzel Count Morzin

Johann Peter Molitor

Johann Peter Molitor - Portrait of Wenzel Count Morzin
The portrait, distinguished for the refined treatment and appealing colour scheme, captured the appearance of Wenzel Count Morzin (d. 1737). The aristocrat is pres - ented in a grand army leader’s stylization, but in reality Morzin is better known as a patron of the composer Antonio Vivaldi and the investor of a famous Lesser Town palace in Prague, rather than by his military achievements - between 1716 and 1717 he participated in the campaign of Eugene of Savoy against the Ottomans. The identity of the portrayed man was verified by a studio replica held in the Krkonošské muzeum (Giant Mountains Museum) in Vrchlabí, in which the count is remembered as a patron of the local Augustinian monastery.
