Woodcutters (Flirting Manservant)

Vojtěch Bartoněk

Vojtěch Bartoněk - Woodcutters (Flirting Manservant)
At the time of their origin, Bartoněk’s paintings were very popular among the wider public which was certainly influenced by their multiple reproductions in illustrated magazines. At the end of 1902, Zlatá Praha published the Woodcutters which is an example in which readers and exhibition audience appreciated the comprehensible daily life topic with a humorous point and Prague's secluded places in the background. However, Bartoněk's painting style stagnated in the realist painting of the 1890s. In competition with the younger generation artists knowledgeable about Impressionism, his works looked cumbersome.
