Jan Lauda - Charwoman
Jan Lauda’s sculpture of an old woman scrubbing the floor is a top work of the realist stream of Czech sculpture in the 1920s that was initiated by Gutfreund’s civility, which drew its primary inspiration from day-to-day life. It reflected the post-war optimism of the people of independent Czechoslovakia in motifs inspired by modern industry and trade or sports and leisure. It was also linked with a yearning for a more socially just arrangement of society to which the critical trend of civilist sculpture points, emphasizing the social characteristics and expressing empathy with the lot of the working man.
