Franz Count Sternberg-Manderscheid

Ferdinand Pischelt

Ferdinand Pischelt - Franz Count Sternberg-Manderscheid
Franz count Sternberg (1763-1830) on his mother's side descendant of the Manderscheid-Blankenheim family, became soon one of the leaders of Bohemian patriotic nobles; he was probably the person primarily responsible for the founding of the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts in 1796. Since 1803 until his death he was president of the Society - its Picture Gallery received from him on loan some three hundred paintings belonging to the family collections. In 1818 he played a decisive role in the founding of the Patriotic (National) Museum and of the Czech Royal Society of Science. The idea for Pischelt's plaster bust, made after the count's death mask in 1830, came from the Society. In 1889 Raffaello Cellai in Florence carved after it a marble bust financed by Franz count Schönforn, who gave it to the picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts.
