Head of a Woman (Fernande)

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso - Head of a Woman (Fernande)
Pablo Picasso delved in sculpture as early as 1898, but did little of this kind of work until the 1920s. Still, his early sculptures are important to the history of European sculpture, as the portrait of his life companion Fernanda Olivier introduced cubism into sculpture. The woman’s tilted head with a high hairdo is stylized in the same manner as Picasso’s paintings drifting to analytical cubism; it follows his paintings from the summer of 1909 done in Horta de Ebro, Catalonia. This sculpture was purchased in 1911 by Dr. Vincenc Kramář from the Paris-based art dealer Ambroise Vollard.
