Girl with a Child

Vincenc Makovský

Vincenc Makovský - Girl with a Child
Girl with a Child is considered a major work of Makovský’s surrealist period (1932-1934). It is disturbing for its strange mystery. Its starting point is a common figural theme and sculpture modellation, which the artist drastically transformed. The legs and arms are cut, the girl’s head and chest are covered with drapery and several bars pierce her body and the child’s deformed body. The composition of the seated female figure with a child in her lap may be reminiscent of the religious theme of the Madonna, but the work defies clear interpretation.
