Aleš Veselý

Aleš Veselý - Enigma III.
Aleš Veselý reached his first creative climax as early as the mid-1960s. During that period, he produced the series of Stigmatic Objects and Enigmatic Objects. Inspired by Surrealism, these abstract expressive assemblages were welded and pasted together from miscellaneous materials, used machine parts and objects, more often than not mechanically impaired or marked by the tooth of time. The virtually magic effect of Enigmatic Objects was still enhanced by traces of gold paint. Their pointed shapes with edges jutting out of and plunging into the objects mirrorred a conflict-ridden amalgam of internalized private suffering and external violence. Thus. the wealth of imagery derived from personal symbols simultaneouslybecame a vehicle carying across the prevailing existential concerns of the time. A parallel can be drawn between Aleš Veselý’s objects and the material painting produced by the “infirmal” movement in abstract art.
