Model of the Aviators Monument

Zdeněk Pešánek - Model of the Aviators Monument
The monument conceived as a multimedia scenic project was designed to pay tribute to all the pioneers of aviation who had died tragic deaths. The news of the crash of the U.S. Navy airship Shenandoah on September 3, 1925 became a key impulse in the design of this monument. Zdeněk Pešánek elaborated it in many models and sketches between 1925 and the late 1930s. The sculpture, installed on a circular base, consists of two main motifs, the wreck of a biplane and the planet Saturn, its ring symbolizing the universe as well as the tragic fatefulness linked with the heroism of the lone aviator. The colourful lights and Geissler tubes were designed to gradually illuminate the sculpture's individual parts in harmony with its mechanical movement. The light play was to be complemented with the acoustic accompaniment and a lighted fountain. The monument was never built.
